Economic Valuation in Natural Resources Management

Reblogged from Willy Fandri's Idea:

Background

Economy is one of the most important magnetic tools for human being’s livelihood. Every activity and what we consume is valued and regulated by market system. This condition, eventually, impact people attitude in biodiversity and natural resources use. In the last decades, conservation communities try to find solution by using market system to give social-economy incentive for biodiversity preservation.

Calamari-Car in front of Tegernsee Museum

"Calamari-Car in front of Tegernsee Museum"

One day in summer 2010 we (indogil, Rjbsr, mom and sister) had a chance to go to Tegernsee. We enjoyed the view in Tegernsee, ate fresh-grilled fish and on the way home visited the Tegernsee Museum. There are a lot of good collections inside. There are also some  arts from Indonesia displayed in the musem for example “wayang” (puppet made of leather from Indonesia) and some paintings. What eye-catchy is the car-scuplpture near the entrance of this Museum which I displayed here. Complete informations about this Museum can be found in their official website http://www.museumtegernseertal.de/.

Musée du Louvre – Shade of Movements

"Shade of Movements"

On the summer 2011 we had a chance to visit the city of love *Pariii*. I was very excited and made hundreds of holiday pictures. This picture is one of them. It was taken inside Musee du Luvre in paris and was intended for HDR photo with 3 frames exposures. I did it with without tripod. When I combined it using Photomatix, it was failed because of the moving objects :? . Luckily I created a wonderful image which captured these movements. So failed or not, I don’t care. I’ve got my shot 8-) .

G.a.r.b.a.g.e in Switzerland, Environmental Friendly – Pocket Unfriendly

I can’t sleep, then keep thinking and thinking …. then my thoughts arrived on my forever activities and of course your forever activities too called “making garbage” and “throwing garbage”. Definitely making garbage is always easier as we enjoy shop, cook, and eat from day to day. A bit difficult is to deal with the garbage.

Here in Switzerland, it could be an expensive thing.

Household garbage, the story of famous-luxus official plastic bags

We can not throw away garbage inside a normal bag/plastic bag to the disposal place near the house. The official garbage truck will not pick it up. That’s why we need to buy  a so called a region-specifics official plastic bag for normal size with a huge price :D , put the garbage inside and then we can throw it. These plastic bags are region specific, in the region where I live the colour of the bag is blue (for Bern canton). One bag could cost between 0,90-4 CHF depending on the size and the region. It is so expensive because the price included disposal-charge. Beside the official bag, it is also possible to make normal bag official by putting a paid sticker on it.  It is extremely forbidden by the law to throw garbage in normal plastic bag, if you insist to do so and get caught, be prepare for the penalty :D . Believe it or not, Swiss health officials and police often open unpaid garbage plastic. They are like detective for gadget, trace your garbage and find the owner of the garbage.

They search for evidence such as old bills which connect the bag to the household/person they originated from. Fines for not paying the disposal fee can now be up to CHF 10’000.- in some municipalities. Again many people are now aware of this and remove their names and details from any documentation disposed of illegally garbage before trashing it (wikipedia).

For your imagination, article http://klutzychef.wordpress.com/2010/05/01/swiss-saturdays-you-pay-what-you-waste/ mentioned the price level of the official bag:

17-liter bag: 9CHF/ 10 bags
35-liter bag: 17CHF/ 10 bags (what the KC household uses)
60-liter bag: 26CHF/ 10 bags
110-liter bags: CHF 20 – / 5 bags (most comparable to an average American garbage bag)

These are how the blue bags look like waiting to be picked up by the officials. It is called "Müllsack" in German.

Have a look a bit closer !!!

Recycled Waste

Beside the story about the luxus bag, it’s make me happy to see that the separation of garbage here in Switzerland is very good. Maybe because of the increasing concerns on environment enhanced by very expensive household disposal charge :D , people tend to separate type of waste for recycle and then throw it in different bins. There are several garbage collection points where we can take our recycled garbage. They are free of charge but be aware of the opening hours. Don’t ask me why do we can not throw the garbage when we have time instead throw garbage when it is open :D you know the answer: “because we are in Switzerland”.

Recycle garbage in Switzerland are sorted into different genders:

  1. aluminium and tin cans
  2. old batteries, light bulbs
  3. glass: differentiate into brown glass, transparant glass and green glass.
  4. paper
  5. PET bottles
  6. textiles, electrical and electronic equipment, and other.

This is how one of the collection points in Zürich looks like. A woman put the trace of hausehold white glass in separate container than any other glass colour.

Anyway, if you have not so much time, there are still possibilities to throw some types in supermarket or retail shops like Migro, Coop etc, eventhough types of garbage you can throw are sometime limited to PET bottles, aluminium and tin cans etc. For paper and karton are easier as big bins are always available around houses.

It seems like the Government of Switzerland had big success promoting recycling by giving the people two choices: recycle more or pay more!!!!!!! This is positive for the environment of course, but in my opinion also too much responsibilities to create the awareness for the environment. As now one of the citizen of Switzerland (temporarily) i would be happier when the government would give an incentive to buy cheaply the recycled garbage rather than charging people too much on the plastic bags :D he he

Anyway I am not totally against this strategy because I enjoy all the time the cleaness of the city and the public places.

This is the result of the whole system, how clean the city of Bern with the river Aare is. For this, I can't complain too much. Photo by indogil in Summer 2010.

As it is mentioned in article Swiss Garbage – Why it is so special? http://www.sustainabilitytelevision.com/blog/augustinelee/2072 Swiss are champion recyclers. In 2003, 47% of all urban waste was recycled – a new Swiss record. They recycled 70% of paper, 95% of glass, 71% of plastic bottles, 85-90% of aluminium cans and 75% of tin cans (http://www.swissworld.org). With this Switzerland managed to be the second best country 2010 in the world after iceland based on Environmental Perfomance Index (EPI) ranks study by the Yale Centre for Environmental Law and Policy http://www.epi2010.yale.edu/Countries/Switzerland. It is very contrast to my country Indonesia which based on this study on the 134th rank :( . Yeah, I have to consider the size comparison of Indonesia and Switzerland of course, but I hope one day Indonesia can reach this point too.

Little Tips

At the end, if you’re just landed in Switzerland my tips are:

  1. try to reduce your kitchen waste by throwing only dry garbage to the paid plastic bags
  2. throw oil and other liquid waste to the toilet
  3. Try to separate PET/plastics garbage because you can always throw it at collection points instead of bulkying your luxus-bag :D
  4. Of course, always shop with your own big bag, with your little bag, or with your “hacken Porche” as grandma does.

Hacken Porsche refers to a shop trolley normally carried by old women in Switzerland or Germany (Rjbsr red.).

Acne Problems, Cream Products and Treatments that Works with My Skin

Today I just about to do my little before-sleep ritual. I recognized that my ritual is now is getting shorter than long time ago. Before I used to spend quiet a long time inside the bathroom to take care my face skin.

I used to have a lot of acne on my face since I was 14.  They are coming and go. Basically they are not cystic acne. If we follow the types of acne from www.acne.com i think they belong to nodular acne category. It could appear in any parts of my face. Once it is appear it will caused a big red dot which is painful. Some white liquids/oil or fat appear on the tip of the dot. It could be popup when it is in hard areas of the face for example on the cheek. But when it is growing up on the soft areas of the face for example around the mouth, then it could be a hell on earth because I can’t pop it out.

Well, it is actually not as easy as said before to describe this acne. I think it is also necessary for me to explain that I have normal-oily skin types, and I used to live in tropical country before I moved to Europe. Below, I write down the problematic aspects of my acne:

  1. When the acne is about to come, I can feel it in the surface on my skin. It is starting to swell and giving uncomfortably pain sensation around it.
  2. When the acne shows up, it took 2 days until one week before I can pop the oil out. It means I have to survive with this acne for the whole week. Sometimes I just pop it too early, and then it starts to break out again and then I have to pop it out again. This is a continue process; imagine how long the trace of the acne will remain on my face!!
  3. I think my acne is caused by bacteria (P. Acnes) because when I have this acne as one dot, it is easy to infect another neighboring areas. Let´s say if I pop it out one time, the next day I woke up and then 3 other new acnes showed up. This is very annoying. It ruins my sunny days.
  4. The last but not the easiest problem is to remove the trace of the acne.

I am not going to continue to explain about acne types and the causes here, I think there bunch of resources on acne information on the net, for example this comprehensive website called www.acne.com or this Q & A about acne.

What I wanted to do is to let you know my successful experience in handling this type of acne. If only you have the same problems maybe you can try my tips. I divided my experiences in two parts:

A long, expensive, torture way

This is the way what I did since I was 20-24 years old. During a very stressful period of my life for example: writing my master thesis, I had a serious break out around my face and I decided to try several products available on the stores ranging from Clearasil – traditional remedies from different website I found on internet. None of these cream and remedies helped my problems. It was so terrible that half of my face covered by acne and I could not concentrated to do something else anymore. Some acne traces caused a lot of light holes on my skin. I could not wait anymore and decided to come to skin doctor nearby the house.

I remember that first, I came to one of the best Skin Doctor affiliation in my country. They toked photo of my face before the treatment, put me in a consultation session, and gave me at the end receipt with the list of the cream and medication what I had to buy at their store. I have to come to the skin doctor regularly every time the cream run out (approximately 1-2 times in a month). Every session starts with consultation, the consultation cost me a lot of money and the creams and medication even cost me much more and more money. It drives me crazy because there are so many creams what I have to put on every day using step by step techniques. Not only this I could never put my make up on because it is a suicide law during doctoral treatments. This is really sucks. I can´t enjoy my life, but I tried to follow this in the sake of free acne skin.

I browse on internet and asked the skin doctor about the medications and cream what they give me. Most of the time the medication on the early stage of treatment consisted of antibacterial pills for example Clindamycin, Erythromycinand etc. The treatment cream will start with washing cream (sometime contained very small percentage of Benzoil Peroxide), then day and night cream. Day cream is normally consist of anti-bacterial and nutritional ingredients. Night cream is normally retinoic acid wich being prescribed into different level of concentrations depending on how terrible the acne is.

After approximately 1 year I changed to another unfamous skin doctor whos giving nearly the same medications with a cheaper price. Of course I stop the medication and cream everytime the acne removed.

As long as I come regularly and do all of these rituals my acne is getting better. But how long will I survive in this situation is another question. I decided to quit it when I move to Europe because I could not yet effort to visit skin doctor here in Europe.

Simple and easy (just a review – no adv. :D )

During the first six months in Europe I had no breakout. I assume that there were still some medications stay in my skin. But after this my acne is come back. I tried several European acne and treatment products available in the stores. They are mostly now effective, even if they are reducing the acne, it will take so long and they are very pricey. One day my housband just got a fever and we went to the apothek close to our house and he simply got an idea to ask if there is a medication available for my types of acne. They gave me a cream in a tube containing Benzoic Acid 5 percent and 2,5 percent.

This is how I use it: I put the cream of 5% Benzoic acid slightly on the surface of my face especially on the acne areas. I used it once in 2 days only during the nights. After 1 week the acne is reducing 70%. After 2 weeks every acne is recovered. I reduce the frequency of using it in to once in 3 days and also reduce the concentration to 2,5 percent. I stop using it after approximately 3 weeks and use black spot removal cream to remove the trace. After one month I have my clear skin :D . Nowadays I use benzoic acid 2,5% cream 1 time in a month to prevent acnes or when I have a lots of breakouts.

One of benzoic acid cream available on the market. Image from: http://www.productreview.com.au/

Of course, I am not ignoring the potential negative effects of this cream. It enhances somehow skin cancer for long term use, but I think as long as we use lowest concentration, small frequency and not using it intensively then it still considerable. One other effect what we really have to take care when using this cream is that it has a bleaching effects, it can bleach hair. That´s why always be carefull with your hair, tie all you hair together so it does not touch your face. And one more thing wash your hand very carefully and very clean after using the cream.

Using it or not??? your choice, I hope this article will be useful.

How bugil met indogil

This is nothing about nudity as my indonesian friends might think This is just a so called history in twoone’s life, a process that might lead to a peak point of the curve well- when it supposed to be so …

It was a gil, who benefitted so much from the possibility of this online world … it was started with her creepy old mobile phone with mig33 installed, had always friend wherever whenever she was, in boring lectures, in waiting etc. … until a better phone with skype capabiliy, plus her works by that time allowed her to extensively used pc and internet. This gil was actually a dreamer, a little dreamer, dream about one compatible part, which is missing, stolen, breaked by previous cast. In order to fullfil her dream, she needs to live in a dream world, world where she acts as fairy God-mother and Cinderella or better to say “upik abu” at the same time. Who knows that she’ll find her dream-frog-prince, end her upik abu story and bring her back to the real space or at least shock her up, kick her on the butt and say: hey you’ve gone too far!!!!! It was one night when this gil sent random hi messages to random higuys and this time with purpose of seeking informations for upik abu’s next cleaning carrier, and as usual every hi-guy is still a hi-guy that never pulled out her attention. Except this one bugil who speaks ” bahasa”. How come this bugil speaks bahasa???? (at the end is clear that he simply asked uncle google or uncle yahoo).

These 2 photos below are taken during our wedding by Andreja Ruppert.

Anyway this is not a story of search engine but this is just the main title about “how bugil met upik abu” it was not bugil actually but upik abu who found bugil, or? Could be bugil who found upik abu? 1 thing is clear then that Bugil by that time was in Indonesia, country where upik abu lives. Conversation was started, bugil had no idea that this gil is actually feminine, the username could be guy or girlguy or guygirl. Bugil and upik abu were talking about war, people, world, religion, hell, God, for sure both had totally different opinions, south-east >< north-west point of view, well it was bugil who had mobile networking problems cause he forgot to refresh the network when he arrived in Indonesia, it was upik abu who call bugil at the first time and was so surprised that bugil has an incredibly charming attractive voice wich later upik abu addicted to. After 15 days-long-time telephone conversation these two pieces aggreed to see each other in their li’l dreamworld, it was a very steady decision because both are sure about each others, the consequences are always there, but upik abu doesn’t really care as long as she can make her dreamworld comes true, to meet her prince and taking her to a happy-ever-after castle. Surprisingly chemistry exist between them and somehow they aggreed to keep connected eventough bugil must end his holiday and come back to his own land. The gil is nearly sure that her dream frog-prince wanna be now is going away and there’ll be no more fairytales between them. She is wrong because this bugil called her back, consistently doing this every day without any absence, this way the gil learn how meaningful she is for him …and how’s he is for her.

Two years passing by until they got a chance to be together again. Through a long complicated classical beurocracy in Indonesia, a lot of sacrifice, money, efforts etc. the gil got all her marriage letters and ready to fly to meet her dream bugil. She gaves not a damn what’s gonna be happened there in the future. Wheather it is gonna be a happy ever after castle or just another vulnerable hut … One thing she knows; follow what your heart say … heaven knows. It was 2 years ago now.

If you’re wondering how are they doing now?????! The gil & bugil. Yes … We’re doing great now. We’re stil together in our happy little so called castle here in Switzerland. We still remember how we met, how the distance is never ever a barrier … How we walked together through our opposites background and culture.

At the end of this story if you ever pass and read by, i want to tell you something. If you’re still looking for your soulmate, don’t waste your time, go for her/him … be consistent, don’t waste your chance when you met her, maybe you only met her once, or twice???  :D

After 10 months: Expression on Four Seasons

It is almost 10 months since I arrived here in European continent, following semi-nomadic lifestyle of rjbsr, moving from one place to place week by week, sometime there in city M, B or T. At the beginning I complained so hard, feel that I can not follow this kind of hectic lifestyle. Despite some advantages like:

  • I washed my clothes in city M wear it the next day in city B
  • We bought milk in city T  and drink it in city M
  • Sitting today at sushibar in city M and the tomorrow sit in starbucks coffe in city B to drink only caramel macchiato
  • Check out the Ski race in Kitbühel on Friday and check out Stanberger Lake on Sunday
  • Enjoy the old city of B on Thursday and the fashionable city of M on Sunday

everything sound as luxurious as it might be, indeed … How good could it be? But on the other hand stressful, yes a lot of pressures for my little little world.

I personally as Indonesian now see how the distances getting shorter, how you can simply conquer hundreds km easily by driving, my walk-explore capability is now definitely increasing, because of rjbsr shows me what is it mean by role on distances, and not to let distances role on you, amazing, I feel like the city where I came from so tiny …

Back to the tittle

Summer
I arrived here last year in the summer when the sun spreads lights freely, when the T difference between Indonesia-Germany-Switzerland is not so significant. I enjoy the freedom what I gain as I walked along the street in the city centre with my a bit open-short summer clothes and my beach sandals, no one giving you a bad sight because of the way you’re clothing yourself, start to recognize how the day time is longer, how you can enjoy the day with 10th time coffe-break stop, doing a lot of sport activities like jogging, bicycling, hiking, etc etc. The time where colorful flowers are everywhere and sexy-feminine girls driving crossing street with their bike … Nightlife is so vary, you can go to the Bar sitting or simply see guys and girls dancing moving their body freely following the beat, it is something what I found so nice but also things what I simply can’t do, not even moving my head around following the music, I am so plainly-rigid upppfffh ∂∩§ç¤ … Was it my cultural background which blocking me to do so or ??? I don’t know. I found it positive to see how people here esp in Germany are able to express their emotion much more; happy, sad, angry, rilex, mad, thankful. I have only ability to express my anger, the rest nothing and nothing ..(maaf maaf maaf, i’ll try to change this for you @Rjbsr) similar experiences was world cup 2010 where Germany made it to semifinal. I was visiting Berlin for holiday and rjbsr took me to a huge bear garden called “Prater” where the people watch football outside in the big screen. I saw nearly everybody jumps and scream every time almost a goal, what an expression!!!!!!

Now i want to jump a little bit to the things what I found strange here;
Small bar/cafe-fully loaded with people: the more crowded the better. Same happen in beer garden in munich, always full of people. This is strange because i like it better when I sit in a soft warm sofa in a low music cafe, have a nice service served directly on my table. Totally the opposite. I can’t stop asking rjbsr about this fact: and his answer will always be the same that “people like it crowd because it is easier to have contact with the other” strange strange strange, for me until now it is still not understandable. Drinking coffe/ice could be like 6 times a day. I love ice scream and coffee before but 6 times a day feel too much … But that was last summer, wait for my text at the end of winter … :D

On the summer there are so many things what we can do, mostly outdoors; hiking, jogging, walking, swimming, bicycling, motorbike driving, driving car open, eating as much as we want ice cream, going out until late at night, shopping, city tour, taking photos (following the facts that nearly all photos you took look great with the sunlight), ship tour around the lake, Alp mountain walk, simply lying down on the green, sitting in the park, camping in the park, sleeping in the car, grilling chicken-sausages-fish-shrimps-corn-steak, sitting outside the house, gossiping with neighbours, get to know each other … The more i wrote the more i miss the summer, even though last time I complained about temperature too hot, no big difference with Indonesia, really i miss summer now …

Autumn
It is around August when I recognized the weather is getting colder, the day is getting shorter, in September I could feel wet T is more often show up. The leaves changing color to dry golden-red-yellow and falling down to the ground creating so beautiful view when the sun once in a while shining and yup “indian summers”. My summer clothes simply not capable protecting me from strong wind, wet rain and cold T anymore, this is the moment where rjbsr shopped me a lot of long t-shirt, water proof jacket, rain jacket, thicker shoes, i am so sorry to rjbsr because by that time I always complain and complain and rejected to wear more clothes. I have always this kind of thinking in my mind “how cold could it be?”

The thing what we do on autumn time  is limited, shorter time, luckily stunning view from thick colorful blatters on the ground entertain you always. This first autumn was my hardest because of the disease which need to be cured at this time.

Winter
Winter is the biggest environment shock after my moving. It was long discussion before: Rjbsr worries that I will not survive winter because of the T and the weather condition. He’s so worry like buying a lot of winter set: winter hat (in German called “Muze”), wool syal, winter shoes and off course “Michelin Mennschen’s Jacket”. At first I always refuse to wear this jacket because when I wear it, it is hard to see myself covered by blowing-jacket on all over my far-below-average-European-size body. I was also a bit scared about walking on the snow, surviving outside the house during winter, I couldn’t imagine this before.
“Michelin Menschen’s” Jacket is our term for dawn jacket which very effective to keep you stay warm during winter, it is called so because the appearance of this Jacket looks like a tire and Michelin is one of the famous tire brand, thy have special icon on their commercial which is Michelin man. So the idea that when you wear it you’ll look a bit like this icon :-)

And then slowly winter came, and it was much nicer than my expectation. First snow fell on November 2010 and I was so excited to play with this soft and clean dry-freezed H2O, of course didn’t forget to bring my first “Schneemann” (snowman) comes to life. Our worries are gone because I survived the T well like Rjbsr. My trick is the hot water. Since I came from Sumatra of course I couldn’t enjoy this facility before, but here it is very helpful, every time I come home after stay long outside, I took a warm bath or warm shower -well warm for me means very warm, nearly burning hot-. In this case I am happy because we’re staying most of the time in Switzerland where there is no metering for hot water usage exist at the appartment, otherwise we’d went bankrupt  , we can forget to do such a thing in Germany. I emphasized the use of hot bath/shower here because every time after, I will feel better and somehow prevented me from having cold on flu during winter time. Let say, it’s one of my surviving recipes :-) .
The peak of my culture-shock-curves is regarding winter activities. How we gained weight day by day because most of the time stay inside the house and do not so many activities, now I understand why the people here would like to have 6-10 cups of coffee stops on the summer time. How outside is grey and the sun is nearly never there. Sometimes it is very depressive that Rjbsr told me a lot of suicide happen at this season. The trees are half-dead. Luckily there so many winter sports we could try. Like skiing, I am so thankful because Rjbsr took me to a ski areas somewhere in Austria, he booked me a ski school there for couple of days. I tell you now that it is not worthy to join a ski lesson (unless a private lesson). It is simply not effective because one teacher will teach a lot of dummy beginners (like I was), you have to wait for every dummies start to roll, it took a long time and cold. Hardest part is to climbing the hill with the ski on, I have a lot of pain after one day.
The best is when someone teaches you privately, and this is what Rjbsr did, be my ski teacher after we decide to cancel the ski school. That was nice and at the end I can ski from the top of the Glacier following very easy routes (after a lot of hard tries). That was very nice. I remember that I see a lot ski-babies (my term for the very young skiing kids). I was so impressed, how the people here trained their kids, they don’t scare about their little kid to play Rodeln (german)/Schilttern (swiss german) or Ski or Snowboard etc etc. No wonder that they grow up trained. I also surprised that these crazy bugils here want to use every thing they can use to play on the ice razz, they even have wok driving race competition (imagine to sit on the wok, and roll down on the ice). Another funny experience was my first shot in Sauna. “After skiing sauna is the best what you can do”, said Rjbsr to me. Owh yeah, and I tried it, I was schok how the nudism is absolutly common. Couldn’t stop laughing inside my heart and my thought was heading back to the girls-gang back home in pku and padang, if only we could see it together then probably we would keep talking about the “P” and the “B” what we just saw around huwahahah.
Beside the shock I think winter is very interesting, I like to see the colorful jacket and accessories, colorful and different look of winter hat and syal and socks and gloves and etc. I bought minimum 7 winter hats and 10 syals because I am in love with it. The kids and the girls looks very nice, this kind view will never ever exist in Indonesia where the T is blistering. Now I understand a bit why the Europeans like to be half-naked when they have holiday somewhere in Asia, it was because some reasons, it never made no sense for me before I came here.
